LiDAR Systems Engineer

Job Description

TriLumina is hiring a system engineer for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Self-Driving sensor systems with a focus in Light Distance And Ranging (LiDAR).  Accountable for specifications, development and validation of ADAS and Self-Driving technologies in automotive applications.  Specifies LiDAR system features, component and system definition and requirements.  Plays a lead role in setting technical direction for LiDAR products and components. Consults with executive team as required.

Core Responsibilities

  • System and Product Development
    • Responsible for influencing and guiding customer design concepts to ensure successful integration of TriLumina’s offerings
    • Translates high-level customer requirements into detailed design documents for engineering and marketing, contributes to design decisions, recommends advanced new designs and/or process or changes to existing designs and/or process to meet requirements
    • Develop LiDAR reference designs with TriLumin Illumination Modules
    • Evaluates internal and external engineering design change requests
    • Develops Design Verification, Plan & Report (DVP&R) incorporating all external, customer-specific and internal functional and performance requirements, while maximizing subassembly design re-use and tool reuse
    • Executes DVP&R, assisting with test setup and fixturing, identifying external testing resources and managing testing through completion
    • Responsible for evaluating customer specifications and translating the system requirements into SW tracking systems (such as DOORS) to meet requirements for test and functionality traceability
    • Supports technical activities regarding sensor fusion, active safety, ADAS, Autonomous vehicles, Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and other emerging applications for TriLumina laser illumination module product line
    • Develops, maintains, and communicates system requirements and implementation time estimates for inclusion in technical and marketing roadmaps
    • Writes functional / feature requirements, subsystem and / or component level requirements
    • Participates in all major design reviews to ensure designs meet customer requirements & specifications as well as ensuring long-term ability to meet rapidly changing market requirements and dynamics
    • Executes system, subsystem and /or component level testing and validation
  • Customer Engagement
    • Assits with customer presentations, interfacing with OEMs and Tier1s on technical topics
    • Responsible for software and system demonstrations developed for customers, strategic partners, OEMs and conferences
    • Leads technical system-level discussions with internal and external customers, helps prepare and present responses to RFIs, RFPs and RFQs for integration of TriLumina Illumination Modules into ADAS systems
  • Product Support
    • Supports system FMEA process and Develop DFMEA (Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis) for recording potential failure modes and planned corrective actions
    • Provides support to application teams for identification of root cause of problems and corrective action to resolve them
    • Applies ISO 26262 to the management of safety related requirements
    • Fosters a team environment and work across both technical and business operations to determine best options for long term product development
    • Assists with other tasks related to LiDAR implementations as needed and determined by Management
    • Responsible for leadership and assistance in the development of new products, and changes to existing products to meet corporate objectives
    • Leads the problem resolution and tracking process and provides feedback on status to tracked problems
    • Must be able to accept personal responsibility and accountability for major analytical and planning assignments
    • Evaluates and recommends options consistent with industry best practices
    • Executes system, subsystem and /or component level testing and validation

Core Competencies

  • Advanced working knowledge of optics and photonics
  • Experience developing  LiDAR or ADAS type reference designs
  • Understanding of sensor fusion architectures and systems for Automotive or related Applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills applicable to engineering and marketing disciplines as well as internal & external customers
  • Experience with automotive active safety systems and products or similar safety systems
  • Must demonstrate ability to identify problems, recommend solutions, and negotiate and execute contingency plans
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork skills by developing consensus and win-win situations

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Bachelors with 10 years experience in automotive systems engineer or LiDAR systems engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with automotive electronic/electro-optical products directly related to ADAS and Autonomous Driving
  • 5+ years of ADAS experience, minimum of 3+ years’ experience in Active Safety Systems
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with automotive LiDAR systems, radar or vision systems or 5 years of optical systems engineering applicable to LiDAR
  • Track record of excellence and innovation in engineering analysis and design
  • Expert knowledge of state-of-the-art systems engineering principles, hardware and software design concepts
  • Working knowledge of AEC-Q100 requirements, APQP and PPAP
  • Working knowledge of current and upcoming advanced driver assistance systems (e.g. LKA, LCC, ACC, LDW, FCW, AEB, self-parking systems)
  • Experience in requirements engineering/management process interpreting requirements from design to production
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS
  • Knowledge and execution of review with change management processes
  • Expert knowledge of system as well as subsystem and component level testing and validation
  • Experience with FMEA methods and tools (e.g. APIS IQ FMEA)
  • Experience working with global teams as well as managing remote teams
  • Working knowledge of functional safety requirements (ISO 26262 or similar standard) and automotive or similar quality requirements (ISO/TS 16949)
  • Working knowledge in optics, microprocessor, automotive ECU, electrical / electronic hardware, embedded software
  • Working knowledge in automotive or similar communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, automotive Ethernet)
  • Expert knowledge in top-level electrical system architectures (e.g., distributed vs centralized control systems)
  • Excellent English skills – both spoken and written
  • Must be able to travel on short notice and for extended periods of time up to 20% supporting internal and customer development trips
